Piranhas break 14 county swim records at Pitt

10885370_10102524544684153_1574495978215280200_nThe Pocono Piranhas YMCA swim team traveled to the 52nd Annual Christmas Meet at The University of Pittsburgh in December and ate up the pool. “These were some of the fastest swims any swimmer from Monroe County has ever swam” said Coach Mike Wolbert.

The record breaking streak was lead by Zack Wolbert a freshman from East Stroudsburg who has been swimming since he was 3 years old.  Wolbert broke records in 8 individual races and was part of 3 relays that also swam faster than any relay ever in Monroe County.  Zack dropped 34 cumulative seconds at the meet shaving the most time in his 400 IM where he dropped over 16 seconds.  “I hoped that I would drop time but I didn’t expect to be able to drop about nearly 2 seconds in my 100 fly with a 51.81 and be ranked 33rd in the country and move my ranking to 31 in the 200 IM with a 1:55.26”

10350551_10102524550911673_5740901879123771557_nJosh Williams from Stroudsburg who is in his senior year followed Wolbert by breaking 4 individual records and was also part of the three record breaking relays.  Williams started swimming with the Piranhas only 1.5 years ago and has had a lot of success.  He has been part of the Stroudsburg High School Team since he was a Freshman.

The fast relays we’re swam by Wolbert and Williams along with Tyler Dalton a Junior at Pocono Mountain East and Alex Counterman a freshman at ESU who swam a 3:41.54 in the 400 medley relay, a 3:19.10 in the 3:19.10 and a 7:28.86 in the 800 Free Relay.

10846189_10102524551061373_2551414859880168379_nIn Girls swimming Emily Wolbert swam a 58.27 to break the county record in the 100 fly.  Emily is a Junior and said “I was just happy to have swam best times, breaking a record was just the icing on the cake”.

The record breakers were joined by their team mates who included Paige Jackett, Madeline Neville, Mary Cerbone, Emily Cabral, Kelsey Eastman, Lauren Fenn, Victoria Fenn, Nadine Parrish, Robert Holderith and William Cerbone many who had many personal best swims.

10868023_10102524546914683_702755017927813142_nThe Piranhas have been attending the Pitt meet for only 4 years.  The meet has a long tradition of great competition and the Piranhas started attending at the urging of BJ Conklyn a former Piranha and current Coach who swam for The University Of Pittsburgh. Ironically Conklyns own 100 Free record was broken by Zack Wolbert at this meet.  Conklyn held the 100 Free record since 2005.

10351574_10102524549973553_6300426646897730027_nThe Christmas meet at Pitt is a great opportunity for top swimmers to be seen by college coaches.  Swimmers attend from all over the Northeast and College Coaches from Kentucky, Penn State, And Virginia Tech were just a few of the coaches scouting out swimmers from the stands.

“This is a great meet for our swimmers as evidenced by the 43 best swims swam by our swimmers this year” said Coach Mike Wolbert who had been coaching the Piranhas for nearly 25 years.
