2016-2017 YMCA Competitive Swim Team Rules
(Updated 9/21/16)

PRACTICES: Practice attendance is a required. Each practice group has their own requirements (See your practice groups). Remember the more you come to practice the faster you will improve, so feel free to attend as many practices you can. Attending practice on a regular basis is important for progress. To view Practice Groups (Click Here).

Attendance of practice is required to attend any meet. Practice Rquiremets: 6 & Under - (1 Practice), 7-10 - (2 Practices), 11-12 - (2 Practices), 13 -14 (3 - Practices), 15 & Up - (4 Practices). If a a swimmer does not attend the minimum REQUIRED practices they will not be elligiable to compete in the following weeks meet.

Arrive 10 minutes early to practice. PRACTICE WILL START ON TIME. If swimmers are late it disrupts practice. Warm-up and stretching is to prevent injuries and discomfort during practice.

Respect and following directions of the coaching staff during practices is a vital part of any team. Bathroom breaks and getting out the pool or to leaving practice for any reason with out the permission of the coaches is not allowed. Swimmers are to come to practice with all of the needed equipment required for their practice group and that equipment needs to be ready for use. Extra goggles and caps should be ready if they should require replacement. Swimmers are to have water bottles filled with water or a sports drink to help keep they hydrated during practices.

After practices swimmers are to STAY IN THE POOL AREA until their parents or ride picks them up. This is for the swimmer’s safety. If a swimmer is caught wandering around after practice they will be subject to suspension from the team. Remember we rent all of our locations and we want to be able to keep practicing there. Each facility has it own rules, regulations and requirements and we need to follow these rules as well. It only takes a few foolish actions to cost our team the use of the facilities. Swimmers are not allowed to play in the halls, outside the schools or in locker rooms after or before their practice time. Any swimmers who are finished with their practice session are to be supervised by parents or leave the facility.

Parents are expected to bring the swimmers to practice ON TIME and pick them up ON TIME. If you are not able to pick your child up on time please make other arrangements. Coaches cannot be expected to supply rides or wait for extended periods of time. If this becomes an issue there will be a late pick up fee assessed at $25.00 per half hour per each time the swimmer's ride is late.

Swimmers are to arrive10 minutes before the meet schedule Warm Up START TIME for all swim meets. If a swimmer misses warm ups with out notice they will be removed from their first event and may be removed form the meet.

There is a Register Policy for ALL LEAGUE MEETS. If you are planning on going to the meet you will need to "Register" for the meet at least 2 days prior to the meet to let the coaching staff know you will be attending so they can enter you in events. To Register Click Here. Keep in mind that all league meets are required and if you need to miss a required meet you will need to email the Swim Team Director with a brief explanation as to why you need to miss the meet.

If a swimmer "Registers" for a meet and DOES NOT SHOW UP they may not be able to swim in the following meet. There will be no exceptions unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Swimmers are required to sit with the team at all times during meets and to stay until the meet is over. We are a team so lets support each other. Swimmers who do not sit with the team or are caught wandering around will be ejected from the meet and sent home.

Water bottles (plastic) are required to be with the swimmers at practices and at meets. (NO JUICE or SODA, ONLY WATER OR A SPORTS DRINK) No eating of Junk Food during practices and meets (Eat fruit, bagels, power bars, pasta, healthy food) (No Candy, Hot Dogs, Soda until after meets are over) YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT!

Have fun at all times! You have made a commitment not only to yourself, but also to a Team.

MEET SCHEDULE: All posted meets on PFY meet schedule are classified as Open, Competitive, USA.

  • Open - Any swimmer in our Programs including Take Your Mark Team Members
  • Competitive - Member of one of our Competitive Swim Team such as Spring, Summer or Winter Swim Teams
  • USA - Member of our USA Swimming team and a member of USA Swimming in order to attend.

Not all scheduled meets are required but swimmers are required to get approval from Swim Team Director in order to attend a non-scheduled meet. Swimmers are not allowed to enter swim meet as "Un-Attached" or send meet entries in for non-scheduled meets. If a meet is not scheduled it is for a good reason and if a swimmer wishes to attend a non-scheduled meet there needs to be a good reason for attending. Non-Scheduled meets will only be allowed if they do not conflict with a League meet, YMCA meet, Important USA meet or a team event.

Winter Meet Schedule will be posted in early September and Spring / Summer will be posted in early spring. There may be adjustments and / or meets added or removed by the Competitive Swim Team Director.

LEAGUE MEET NUMBER OF EVENTS: The maximum number of events a swimmer can swim at Winter League meets is 3 individuals or 2 individuals and 1 relay or 1 individual and 2 relays. (Not all swimmers will get to swim 3 but coaches will do there utmost to make sure that all will swim at least 2 events in each meet. USA SWIMMING MEETS AND INVATATIONAL MEETS:

Entries will not be sent in if a swimmer is not paid up to date for program, YMCA membership or USA membership fees prior to the entry is being sent out even if the event deadline is prior to start of the program. (Example: entry deadline for a USA meet is due in September but the meet is in November the swimmer needs to be already signed up for Winter Competitive Team or on monthly bank draft.)

Swimmers are required to sit with the team at all times during meets and to stay until the meet is over. We are a team so lets support each other. Swimmers who do not sit with the team or are caught wandering around will be ejected from the meet and sent home.

RELAYS: Top or "A" Relays will in most cases will be compiled of the 4 fastest swimmers but this is always up to the coach's discretion to add any swimmer they wish to a relay. Practice attendance can be a major factor. (See Practice Group Requirements) Relays can change as close as 2 events before the race.

During our Winter Competitive Team and when attending YMCA Districts, States and Nationals our team is permitted to enter ONE (1) Freestyle and ONE (1) Medley relay per age group, both boys and girls. Each relay will be made up of the Four (4) fastest individual swimmers, (however there are times when we use coaches discretion ie. a swimmer has not done their best time since early in the season or if the swimmer is not performing well at the meet) available for that relay. Some swimmers could swim two (2) relays and one (1) individual event. Remember, this is done to benefit YOUR team.

NO RELAY WILL BE FINAL UNTIL THE DAY OF THE MEET!!! Also note, relays can be changed from Districts to States, again as to what is best for the team. (HOWEVER, if a relay is changed from Districts to States, and a swimmer qualifies for the STATE meet ONLY on a relay, that swimmer will still swim a relay at the STATE meet.) Our goal is to have one freestyle and one medley relay in each age group, both boys and girls, at the State meet. All relays are put together by the coaching staff. There is to be NO INPUT from parents.
